What is Your Inner Voice Telling You?

ME: I’m so excited to start a new adventure in my life!

VOICE: You are? Are you sure you’re going to be able to do this?

ME: Well… yeah… I think so. Don’t you think so?

VOICE: I don’t know. You’ve never done this before. I mean, this is all new to you. You’d have to work really hard to figure it out. You’ll have to put yourself into situations where you could fail. And what if you don’t like it?

ME: I’ve been thinking and planning it for a long time. I know I’ll have to work hard but it’s really what I want to do.

VOICE: What if you aren’t any good at it? What if people reject what you have to offer?

ME: Yeah… I know… that’s the part the scares me the most. What do you think I should do about it?

VOICE: I’d play it safe. Make sure whatever you do is done perfectly and don’t put yourself out there too much.

These thoughts roll around in our heads and our inner voice gets the better of us. This is the voice that draws on our doubt and fear. It’s the voice that holds us back from living our purpose… from doing things that matter. And that’s when it most often shows up… when we’re doing something that matters. Think about it… if we were staying status quo, if we weren’t on the road to something great, fear and doubt wouldn’t show up at all!

So what do I make of the voices in my head? It means I’m heading somewhere… a place I would make an impact. If I weren’t doing something that mattered, then my inner voice would be silent… it wouldn’t have anything to challenge me with. I’ve learned to listen to my inner voice and use it to drive me even more. I work harder simply to prove to myself that I can accomplish what I set out to do.

“Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness that most frightens us. We ask ourselves, ‘Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, fabulous?’ Actually, who are you not to be? You are a child of God. Your playing small does not serve the world.” ~ Marianne Williamson
