Little Jimmy was talking to his mom one day…
Mom: What do you want to be when you grow up?
Jimmy: I will be whatever God wants me to be.
Mom: That’s nice, dear…
Jimmy: I think God wants me to be a pirate.
Mom squashes Jimmy’s dream: A pirate? Are you kidding me, Jimmy? You’ll never be a pirate. You’d have to live on a stinky boat, swab the deck, and take orders from someone like Captain Jack Sparrow. The pay would be nothing at all and it’s evident they don’t offer dental insurance… I’m sure there is something more respectable that you can be, dear.
Jimmy squashes Jimmy’s dream: How could I ever be a pirate? I don’t know how to swim. I don’t know how to search for buried treasure. I don’t own a talking parrot and I don’t even know how to swing a sword. What a crazy idea…
Jimmy pushes his dream down: I can’t be a pirate now. I have a family to provide for. I mean, how would my wife handle it if I was out to sea for months at a time? Maybe after the kids have grown and I’ve saved up enough money, then I’ll be a pirate.
What’s your dream? What holding you back? Other people’s expectations? Your own insecurities? You just don’t think now is the time? It’s not too late… you’re not too old… if you don’t have the skills, you’ll learn them.
I’d love to hear you comments about what you wanted to be when you grew up and what you’re doing about it NOW!
