The week between Christmas and New Year doesn’t really belong anywhere. The previous year is over… you’re burning the rest of your vacation, keeping the kids busy while they’re out of school, and packing away your Christmas decorations.
But the New Year hasn’t begun yet. No parties, no ball dropping, no resolutions. No man’s land.

But I like this week. I purposely stay quiet this week. I stand at the brink of a new year. I come with mixed emotions as I look back on the last 12 months and turn my eyes to the next 12 months. Do you ever feel the need to wrestle with a few things? To either not repeat the same mistakes or give yourself a well deserved nod for things that went right? Yeah… me too. I do it this week.

Following are 10 questions I ask myself…

  1. What is the greatest lesson I learned this year?

  2. What were the 2 or 3 themes that kept recurring?

  3. What were the top 10 things I accomplished this year? Professionally and personally.

  4. What key decision did I make that had a significant impact on my life? What was the impact?

  5. What 10 things did I learn this year? Personally or professionally…

  6. Which relationships in my life grew this year and which ones regressed? Why?

  7. What disappointments or regrets did I experience this past year? Where did I let myself or others down?

  8. What am I most proud of this year?

  9. What was missing from last year?

  10. What 5 things will I continually strive to improve in the next year?

I haven’t answered them yet but I will in the weeks ahead. It’s not a time to throw a pity-party with a guest list of one. It’s a moment of honesty… a learning moment where I do 3 things:

  • Acknowledge where I didn’t deliver on my promises (to others or myself),
  • Recognize the gap between where I am and where I want to be,
  • Bask in my accomplishments.

Simple, right? Not always. This week is a necessary part of my growth. If you want to grow in the next year, I’d suggest you do the same. Let’s harness the power of the pause together. I’ve written on my calendar that I’ll be answering these questions on Tuesday, the 30th… what day will you be doing it? I’ll be sharing some of my answers in the posts to come and I fully expect you’ll be commenting too!

Now I’d like to hear from you! What date have you selected? Where will you go to harness the power of the pause?
